Biography Maurice BUFFET (1909 - 2000)  From Reality Poetic With Symbolic Surrealism   

Maurice Buffet Was Born; In Les Sables D’Olonne In 1909 From Parents In Vendée. Contact With The Sea Had A Profound Impact On Him. Studies At DREUX College. Dedicated To The Art Of Stained Glass Which He Studied At Chartres Then To Paris Where He Works As A Designer-model Maker For Master Glassmaker Jacques Gruber. He Also Participates In Decorative Glass Projects For The ILE De FRANCE Liner. Befriends Each Other With Francis Grubert And Frequented Montparnasse Where He Met Soutine And Kisling As Well As The Brasserie Du Select Group.

   - 1927: He Enters The The School Of Decorative Arts Then The Ecole Des Beaux Arts In Paris. Diplomas Obtained.

  - 1934: He Created A Stained Glass Workshop In Paris. TOURS.

   - 1937:  It Attaches To SEVRES Where His Wife, An Associate Professor Of English, Is Appointed.

   - 1940: He Is Taken Prisoner In June, Escapes And Passes Into The Free Zone. Lyon Where 18 Months Left. Having Become Clandestine, He Did Decoration And Illustration Work And Was Able To Devote Himself Fully To His Work. Painting.

   - 1946: First Personal Exhibition In Paris. The Carmine Gallery, Which Enjoyed Great Success With The Public And Critics And Particularly With Gertrude Stein. His Painting Interested Other Painters Who Invited Him To Work. Participate In Various Groups Such As The Poetry Of Reality, The Reality Of Poetic, The THREE DIMENTIONS (Durand Ruel). He Published An Album Of Lithographs On The Cathedral Of Chartres (then Stripped Of Stained Glass). Limited Edition Work On Press Arm (Lucien Destroyed); The Cathedral Is Magnified And Seen In A New Light.

He Regularly Exhibits  In Various Parisian Galleries.

  - 1948: Bernard Buffet Makes A Highly Publicized Entry Into The World Of Painting. Maurice Buffet Is Then Forced To Give Up Parisian Galleries... Should He Change His Name When He Is Already In The Spotlight? Known... ? Maurice Buffet Persists: A Research Painter, He Decides To Devote Some Time To Painting. The Study Of Nature In Order To Free Oneself From Any Foreign Influence On Its Own. Himself And Deepen His Vision Of Reality. He Is Now Better Known To Painters And Connoisseurs Than To The General Public.

  - 1954: The City Of Paris Buys Several Paintings From Him. Named Member Of The SALON D’AUTOMNE.

   - 1955  : Participates In The LES GRANDS ET LES JEUNES D’AUJOURD’HUI Exhibition. First Mention At TheGRAND PRIX DE LA VILLE DE PARIS.

   - 1958  : Member At Agrave; The NATIONALE DES FINE ARTSof Which He Will Become PRESIDENT -Painting Section-.Purchases From The STATE In Particular For The Palais De Tokyo Of A Painting Exhibited At Durand Ruel.

  - 1959: Grand Prize From The General Council Of Seine Et Oise For His Painting Auberge De La Tête Noire In Paris. Bellevue.

  - 1960: Special Exhibition As Part Of The Marian Festivals Dedicated To The Stained Glass Windows Of Chartres « WALLS Of LIGHT » ; The Stained Glass Windows Of The Cathedral Are A Luminous Fusion At The Limits Of Abstraction And Yet Identifiable To Those In The Know. Latin Lands. He Will Exhibit Regularly During All The Shows Of This Important Event.

   - 1961  : The Murs De Lumiere Exhibition Is Going To Paris. New York (Vera Lazuk Gallery); Same Enthusiasm From The Public, Same Great Success. Now He Is Turning To The United States Where Several American Merchants Make Regular Purchases From Him. Paris He Refuses To Go To Make A Special Exhibition, Barred By The Unfortunate Homonym. Exhibitions Follow One Another In The USA "Sagittarius Gallery", Dallas « Barbizon Gallery ».

   - 1962  : Special Exhibition In Paris Cannes: FRENCH GALLERY (Lands Of Sunshine).

   - 1964  : Automobile Grand Prix (Le Mans)

.Maurice Buffet Travels. In Italy: Bomarzo, The Italian Lakes, Venice, The Guidecca. Provoke A Shock And A Real Discovery Which Will Now Be Felt Throughout His Work.

  - 1966: With The Support Of TheROR WOLMAR Galleryhe Decides To Show His Works Again PARIS (Theme Of Lost Paradises). The Reviews Are Good: There May Be Two BUFFETs, But For The Public The First Name Remains Unknown. Do...Grand Prix SIGNATURES (Poetic Reality).

   - 1967  : He Exhibits At The Cannes Biennale Of Arts And Received The MICHEL ANGE Grand Prize.

   - 1968  : He Participates In L’EXHIBITION OF PAINTERS WITNESSES OF THEIR TIME, of Which He Will Be Part Each Year.Grand PRIX DU CONSEIL GENERAL With The Canvas « Auberge De La Tête Noire In Bellevue ».

   - 1969  : Various Exhibitions: MIRAGE Gallery à; Montpellier, Galerie Du Beffroy At; Fougeres. REFLETS Gallery In Paris Brussels...

   - 1970: Exhibition At TheManuel Rudolf Gallery At Agrave; BERN.

  - 1971: Recognized Painter Maurice Buffet Now Makes A Living From His Painting. He Participates In Most Of The Salons D’Ile De France (Juvisy, Colombes, Vanves, Viroflay, ST Maur, Sceaux, Versailles, Antony, Velizy. He Is Frequently A Member Of The Jury.

   - 1977  :PUVIS DE CHAVANNES Prize-Société Nationale Des Beaux Arts-

   - 1980  : Guest Of Honor To The Taverny Culture House. The Town Hall Acquired The Painting Which Won The Grand Prix Of The Exhibition.

   - 1981  : Great Success At The France-Japan Exhibition At TOKIO.

   - 1989  : Maurice Buffet àgrave; 80 Years Old. Exposed To Thewhite Lys Gallery At Agrave; PARIS

.Presents 53 Paintings At ThePalais Des Festivals De ST Jean De Montswhich Are Representative Of His Research, Particularly In The Context Of Symbolic Surrealism.

   - 1990  : Death Of His Wife Marcelle In Paris. His Home In SEVRES.

   - 1992  : He Is The Guest Of Honor Of The Exhibition « The Present Artists » Of The Paris Air Show.

   - 1993: Guest Of Honor At The SEVRES Salon: SEL.

   - 2000: He Continues To Paint Despite His Great Age And, Very Affected By His By The Death Of His Wife, He Died At His Home In Sèvres In June 2000.
