Description
"Diamond Rock" is an islet located off the southwest coast of Martinique, near the town of Diamant. This iconic natural site on the island takes its name from its shape, which, seen from certain angles and at certain times of the day, can resemble a rough diamond. Diamond Rock is approximately 175 meters high and is located approximately 3 kilometers from the coast and has become a refuge for many species of seabirds, including frigate birds and brown boobies, which nest there. The rock is also surrounded by coral reefs, making it a popular spot for divers, although the currents are often strong and access is reserved for experienced divers. Diamond Rock is also steeped in history. During the Napoleonic Wars, it was occupied by the British, who fortified it and used it as a strategic surveillance post.
