Description
The mascaron nicknamed "La Négresse" is a sculptural element that is located in Bordeaux, linked to the history of the transatlantic slave trade. This mascaron, like others similar to it, is found on the facades of historic buildings in Bordeaux, particularly around the Place Royale, today called Place de la Bourse. Bordeaux was a major port in colonial trade in the 18th century, a time when the slave trade, also known as the "triangular trade", played a significant role in the city's economy. Ships left Bordeaux loaded with goods for Africa, where they exchanged these goods for slaves. These slaves were then transported to the colonies of the Antilles and the Americas, where they were sold. Finally, the ships returned to Bordeaux with colonial products such as sugar, coffee, or cotton.
