The huts on stilts of the Arcachon basin are emblematic constructions located on the Île aux Oiseaux, in the heart of the Arcachon basin, in Gironde, France. These huts on stilts (hence the term "tchanquées", which means "mounted on stilts" in Gascon) have become a strong symbol of the region. The first huts on stilts were built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They originally had a utilitarian function: they served as surveillance posts for the oyster beds located nearby. Oyster farmers used these huts to monitor their farms, while being protected from high tide. The raised huts thus made it possible to stay dry even at high tide and to have a clear view of the basin.
