 Maliwan Delphine  Senn

Drawing and painting lessons, then theater and singing in Asia. This is indeed what we read in his restricted biography, restricted I believe out of modesty, to somehow hide his light. And Delphine is right, because we will discover light by observing her works. It's as if we were reading, at least that's what my thoughts suggest, a passage from L'Amant by Margherite Duras, with the necessary distinctions of course, of this little girl in Indochina who crosses the Mékong delta at aboard a boat and who meets the slant-eyed love of his life. It was probably like this when Delphine returned to Europe. However, I do not want to venture into the sentimental stories of Maliwan Delphine Senn; what interests me, however, are her artistic creations. Do they evoke the Orient? Yes. In a certain way. But they evoke the West just as well. They evoke a time gone by, while living in the present. They evoke a past world. but quite close, this 20th century which has said a lot of things in all areas and to which the younger generations owe at least respect, even affection. And it is indeed the affection that Delphine feels for the last century, for its writing which cannot help but recall it, these colored lines which delicately extend over the paper by drawing its figures. A world, that of Delphine, completely invented. which passes (in memory) from the fantastic of Jean Cocteau with his blacks and whites to; another fantastic one, that of Max Ernst or Victor Brauner in color. I said in memory, because these are distant memories, fixed in the mind among the things important to us. keep in the eyes. However, Delphine is similarly interested in her work. the time when she lives, and lo and behold; that, without betraying its initial markers, luminescent images appear, (almost) technological, like geographical maps on which small luminous points indicate to us a route which speaks to us of distant, joyful worlds, as if in a fairy tale. ;you. A “return” in the Asia so loved and never forgotten? Still this link with Marguerite Duras? There is indeed Thailand to choose from. the place of Indochina, but what remains the same is the never-fading love for this distant land. Or for the shimmer of the water which stays in the eyes when we observe it from the top of the boat.

The life and artistic journey of this artist is one of a kind. my opinion very interesting. It gives a glimpse of the Orient which combines with the France of the avant-gardes of the 20th century between surrealism and symbolism, without forgetting certain fascinations for the decomposition of the image very dear to us. Picasso, or just as well; certain Viennese transgressive challenges of the same century. I am thinking of certain drawings by Hundertwasser, for example, in which the human figure was hidden in the dense and almost abstract writing of the story. Here the story, on the contrary, is undoubtedly only figurative (let no one be trapped by the abstractions of the sign) and has a certain sacred character. which comes to him from listening to ancient oriental fables where the search for religion goes through the search for man, in which love and eroticism cannot do without esotericism and its rituals fixed in time. p>

What is certain is that the works of Maliwan Delphine Senn are surrounded by a halo of mystery, and as such it escapes any suspicion. a unambiguous interpretation. What remains for us is the conviction that in order to be able to approach the his painting you have to go beyond, like Alice. Beyond of the mirror.
