 Maliwan Delphine  Senn

Drawing and painting classes, then theater and singing in Asia. That's what we read in his limited biography, limited I believe out of modesty, to hide his light in some way. And Delphine is right, because we will discover the light by observing his works. It is as if one were reading, at least that is what my thoughts suggest to me, a passage from The Lover by Margherite Duras, with the necessary distinctions of course, of this little girl in Indochina who crosses the Mekong Delta on a boat and meets the love of her life with slanted eyes. It was probably like that when Delphine returned in Europe. However, I do not want to venture into the sentimental stories of Maliwan Delphine Senn, what interests me on the other hand are her artistic creations. Do they evoke the Orient? Yes. In a certain way. But they also evoke the West. They evoke a time gone by, while living in the present. They evoke a world that is past but quite close, this 20th century. key that has said a lot in all areas and to which the younger generations owe at least respect, or even affection. And it is indeed affection that Delphine feels for the seat ;last century, for its writing which cannot help but recall it, these colored lines which extend delicately on the paper drawing its figures. A world, that of Delphine, complete ;recently invented which passes (in memory) from the fantastic of Jean Cocteau with its blacks and whites to another fantastic, that of Max Ernst or Victor Brauner in color. I said in memory, because it is about the same ;distant memories, fixed in the mind among the important things to keep in mind. However, Delphine is in the same way interested in the time in which she lives, and here, without betraying its initial landmarks, luminescent images appear, (almost) technological, like geographical maps on which small luminous points indicate a route that speaks to us of distant, joyful worlds, like a party. A “return” in the much loved and never forgotten Asia? Still this link with Marguerite Duras? There is Thailand instead of Indochina, but what remains identical is the love never dozing for this distant land. Or for the shimmer of the water that remains in the eyes when we observe it from the top of the boat.

The life and artistic journey of this artist is ; in my opinion very interesting. It gives a glimpse of the Orient which combines with France of the avant-gardes of the 20th century between surrealism and symbolism, without forgetting certain fascinations for the decomposition of the image very dear to Picasso, or just as well to certain Viennese transgressive challenges of the same century. I am thinking of certain drawings by Hundertwasser, for example, in which the human figure was hidden in the dense and almost abstract graphics of the cit. Here the story, on the contrary, is undoubtedly only figurative (let no one be trapped by the abstractions of the sign) and possesses a certain sacred character. which comes to him from listening to ancient oriental fables where the search for the religious passes through the search for man, in which love and eroticism cannot do without the esotericism and its rituals fixed in time.

What is certain is that the works of Maliwan Delphine Senn are surrounded by a halo of mystery , and as such it escapes a univocal interpretation. What remains for us is the conviction that in order to approach his painting we must go beyond it, like Alice. Beyond beyond of the mirror.
