This oil painting by Sako captures with remarkable intensity the surge of a wave, frozen in a moment of pure energy. The artist shows the sea in motion, not as a simple landscape, but as a living, almost organic entity, deploying its force in a powerful and fluid gesture. The shades of blue and green, which slide subtly into each other, convey the depth of the water as much as its transparency. The light seems to spring from the very heart of the wave, illuminating its belly with a vibrant emerald green before blossoming into white foam. The pictorial material is dense, almost sculpted: the reliefs of paint, particularly in the foam, give a palpable texture to the surface of the sea. We can guess the broad gesture of the brush, perhaps also of the knife, which traces the curves of the water and suggests the swirls on the surface.
About the artist
Born in Montmartre in 1963, painting and writing have allowed Sako, whose real name is Serge Armagan, to put words to his pain. A painter for 40 years, but having always painted, he acknowledges that he is only just beginning to understand that the quest for excellence is a life's work and never ends. This humility, this quest for visual emotion that we offer to the gaze of others, are the guiding principles of his work.
