Description
This masterful watercolor depicts a front view of an elegant team of white horses pulling a carriage. Dressed in traditional costume and topped with a top hat, the coachman skillfully directs the horses beneath an ancient portico. The scene is captured in a palette of dark grays and browns, punctuated by soft whites that highlight the carriage and architectural details. The depiction of the arch and carriage conveys a sense of movement and depth that transports the viewer straight to a Europe of yesteryear. The moment draws history. The combination of precise technique and evocative design makes this work a fascinating window into another era.

Horst Ludwig, born in 1946, - nominated for the Artist OF EUROPE AWARD 2024 in Florence - is a renowned artist with many years of experience and great expertise in the field of painting. Since his childhood, animals, especially horses, have accompanied him as loyal companions. In his youth, Horst Ludwig spent a lot of time in the old churches and cathedrals of the former GDR, where he often supported painters and picture restorers. In the community of freelance painters, he learned various painting techniques, and his talent was recognized and encouraged early on. This time had a lasting impact on his passion for painting.
Horst Ludwig is the proud father of two daughters. After 57 happy years of marriage, he lost the love of his life in February 2023. Despite this loss, the shared love of Arabian thoroughbreds and their breeding continues to shape everyday life on the family estate near Stralsund on the island of Rügen, where he lives and works as a free spirit and artist. His studio, affectionately called "Kleckshäuschen", is called "al Kuhl," derived from the Arabic word "al-kuhl," which for him symbolizes the beauty, elegance and grace of Arabian horses as well as the trust and deep bond between humans and animals.
Horst Ludwig's passion for horses and life in all its facets is impressively reflected in his works. The painter exhibits regularly and his studio is open to visitors, who are always welcome.
