Baptiste Gin

Born on December 19, 1998, I am a young Parisian painter. The son of a photojournalist father and a psychologist mother, an art lover, I was quickly introduced to understanding the outside world and its representations, as well as to internal feelings and the ability of art to express them.
Having always had a passion for art, I became interested in living artists, close to my generation. This is how I met the painter JISBAR. Passionate about his work and the concrete proof of the existence of this profession, my path was mapped out.
As soon as I graduated from high school, I began working alongside him as an assistant. For 8 years, I received teaching at in the manner of ancient painters, maintaining a relationship of mentoring rather than assistance, which allowed me to acquire all the skills that I use today in my work. With the eye sharpened by my parents, fueled by my passion and equipped with the skills necessary to make all this a reality, I decided to launch my own practice that I present to you today.

Artistic approach

My artistic practice is based on a deep fascination with painting and its unique power to transport the viewer. However, this power is often constrained by the physical limitations of the frame. My work revolves around this tension:
How can I transcend these boundaries while respecting the inherent rules of painting?

The internet plays a central role in my creative process. I see it as a vast library of images from which I draw iconographic fragments. I recycle some of these billions of images to compose new ones, in a process similar to that of generative AI. These images, collected over the course of my research, are decontextualized, reassembled, and transformed. This constant dialogue between the found image and my own creative vision enriches my approach. Each composition becomes a response to the visual proliferation that characterizes our era while offering a new perspective on our relationship to the image.

In my works, narrative occupies a central place. I am interested in the way images interact with each other and create open-ended stories. This approach has often led me to work in the form of diptychs or series, questioning the continuity I explore the narrative between the paintings and their ability to function individually or in dialogue with each other. The viewer is thus invited to fill in the narrative gaps and become an actor in the creation of meaning.

Contemporary iconography deeply informs my world. I draw inspiration from the visual codes of cinema, memes, and reels to construct universal and immersive narratives. My process begins with a digital collage, where found images are organized into complex scenes. These compositions are then projected onto canvas, where traditional painting intervenes to transcribe them into a tactile and expressive language. Through vibrant touches and saturated colors, the painting becomes the final link between the digital world and the materiality of the work.
