Discover the contemporary work of BRAT
Brat was born in Paris in May 68... He first became a director and screenwriter, a profession he still practices today. Self-taught, he feeds every day on the most diverse forms of art, as many images, encounters, emotions that shape his universe as an observer of the permanent mutation of a world that questions him. This is the very essence of his reflection.
From his paintings, an incredible force emerges. The force of the “collective unconscious”... Each work lets intimate feelings reappear in us. An art that translates his permanent curiosity, giving his works, composed with abundance, an explosive and flamboyant poetry! Brat likes to believe in the energy of composition. He reinvents, gives another meaning to images, breathes new life into them to tell another story.
For him, art is an impulsive wave... It is adding life to life.
Brat's "Multiverse Theory" works invite us on a timeless journey. A journey where space-time has no directionality of era, theme, or place... A kind of "pop quantum fluctuation"! Composed of boxes, like multiple bubbles that suggest a universe, a period, a reference, an icon, an energy; the works invite the eye to search, to discover, to remember. A multiplicity of references, from yesterday and today, which offer a journey to the viewer.
The accumulation of panels brings to mind the associations of a mind as distracted as it is fertile, bombarded with media messages, memories, unrealities and other references. Both in terms of composition and the effect produced, Brat succeeds in reducing the gap between all arts, all genres, all eras, all worlds! In this sense, Brat operates a visual short-circuit: he suggests to the viewer a first simple and impactful vision... The immediate effect, in a flash "Pop"! Then there is a second vision, more curious, where the viewer rushes to look for his own references, or on the contrary to question the discoveries that the work reveals to him.
Brat draws his inspiration and energy from his memories as much as from his daily discoveries... From popular culture to "high culture", he thus brings the icons of music, cinema, sport, back into the world of consumption from which they come. They are reintegrated into the structure of the painting, mixed with advertising, historical, artistic, literary and even political images... The portraits are composed in the middle of posters, logos, brands or vintage photos. Sometimes we can find a link from one box to another. the other, an association of ideas, or simply a generational shift, a temporal glitch, which complements each other. It is not uncommon for images and words to also mix... Words that remain suspended like mottos, slogans, onomatopoeias or advertising refrains. Brat creates in each work a world of illusions in which the spectator enjoys losing himself.
The "BabyBrat" sculptures with 360° mirror heads allow us to play on ourselves again... On our reflection, our deep being. ! Playful works at first glance, but which raise an underlying reflection, much deeper and more critical than their simple "pop" aesthetic. A game of reflection and transformation of ourselves, and of the world around us.
His "Vanities" present an anticonformist rereading of the "Memento Mori" of Antiquity or the Renaissance, challenging the viewer on the ephemerality of his own existence... Who are we? Where do we come from? Where are we going? How important are we? How important do we think we are?
