Discover the contemporary work of Brigitte A.Calderon
Of Moroccan origin, I live between 🇫🇷, Nîmes, and 🇺🇸, Princeton. It is through my works that I explore my triple identity. I began my journey eight years ago by working on textiles with vegetable dyes. Then I launched into collage and abstract painting. More recently, I discovered the digital world. Which allowed me to add a dimension to my work: the digital manipulation of my own collages and paintings. A constant in my work remains the use of vibrant colors, probably a legacy of my Moroccan roots. What I like most about my work is the possibility to build, deconstruct and rebuild. The combination of collages, paintings and digitalization opens unlimited horizons that fascinate me as much as they intimidate me. But, it is my passion that prevails.
I work on canvas or various papers. I use acrylic paints, colored pencils or charcoal. I mix all sorts of materials - old photos, magazine images, newspaper articles, fabrics, pieces of wood and sometimes even my husband's old t-shirts. I love giving new life to all these media and objects.
As for digital manipulations, I proceed as follows: first I take a photo of one of my collages or paintings. Then I manipulate this first photo on my computer. I print this new version and sometimes modify it by adding collages, or touches of paint. again I take a photo of this version that I digitally manipulate. I repeat these steps as many times as necessary until I am satisfied with the result and, finally, I print on metal or very high quality paper the image in question.
