Discover the contemporary work of Caty Laurent
Mosaic artist for around twenty years, I first worked in painting. marbles, granites, travertines, slabs and glass pastes...
For 10 years, I have mainly worked with slate.
I work with a little-used material. - slate - fissile shale rock, which I break, split, trim, drill, cut or chisel, pushing its limits, to build paintings, sculptures, mobile installations or wall mosaics.
I have completely adopted this subject; I lighten the rendering by an arrangement and an position of the tesserae which is not very classic.
On the edge, at; flat, skewed, chiseled, suspended, slate has infinite possibilities of rendering, and presents, through its texture and color, many light effects< /strong> and shadow play in a moiré range varying from blacks to grays.
The binder is an integral part of the work; trace, pattern or background, it reinforces or contrasts the material, sometimes becoming material itself.
My works are minimalist: simplicity; shapes, nuanced monochrome depending on the viewer's position in space and the evolution of natural light.
I want to go to the essential, without embellishment or superficiality.
The external interventions allow me to express excess by integrating the work into the surroundings. architecture or nature.
I'm looking for lightness. unexpected, poetic, playing on the material, the reflections, the movement, the tinkling of the slate.
If the titles are often evocative, everyone to interpret this work. I let imagination and intuition prevail over reality. and the tangible.
Pictures deliberately without frame, out of frame, deframed, reframed, by new reference points, I propose another reading of the mosaic strong>.
