Discover the contemporary work of Christophe MARTINEZ
Christophe MARTINEZ was born in 1966 in Lorient.
He spent his early childhood in Brittany, then grew up in the Mediterranean basin in Nice, then Port La Nouvelle.
At a very young age, he drew, and was introduced to painting thanks to the meeting of Mr. Alain LABOUCARIE, his school teacher.
From the age of 15, he tried his hand at watercolor, and for 10 years, will paint landscapes of Minervois, and the coast of Gruissan.
In the 90s, he discovered acrylic, and creates very realistic canvases, but often monochrome, declining the chosen color, from the lightest to the darkest. He then creates a series of canvases on Agde in blue tones, including the chapel Notre Dame de l'Agenouillade.
At the end of the 90s, he confronts himself with oil and creates canvases, from photos taken during his travels. He works on using only 2 or 3 colors, trying to reproduce the photo in a watered-down way.
It is through these many trips around the world that Christophe will find meaning in photography, particularly by observing singular things, and sometimes retaining only the detail. This is how he will paint gradients of yellow and green, following taking a very close-up photo of eucalyptus bark.
Detail inspires him in photography, and in the image in general.
From this painting, an observation emerged in him: the detail he painted does not necessarily evoke its origin for the observer and gives free rein to the latter's imagination.
In this new series, Christophe wanted to go even further, by drawing inspiration from the ink stains used in Rorschach tests.
Thus, everyone, according to their sensitivity, their personality, their mood, will be able to seek, or find, the good as well as the bad, the beautiful as well as the ugly, the figurative as well as the abstract.
Christophe is self-taught. Painting allows him to observe life in its smallest details, to fix them and to have fun with them.
