Discover the contemporary work of Constance Gignoux

Born in Nîmes in 1957, I grew up by the beach and studied piano for 7 years. After a stint at the Beaux Arts in Montpellier (Combas and Di Rosa class), I was accepted into mural painting at the Beaux Arts in Paris, but I had to take the path of film and TV sets to make a living. I have been collaborating regularly with press agencies and production companies since 1985 as a makeup artist.

Days not filming are devoted to collage and painting. I spent a year at La Grande Chaumière and two years at Paris Ateliers, practicing lithography and oil painting. I have been exhibiting in Paris since 2017.

Inspired by rock and comics in the 80s, I didn't embrace the free figuration movement but chose to try to find the link between music and painting. Listening to Frank Zappa and John Zorn, to name a few, resulted in dense collages, leaving little free space on the canvas. Music transports and uplifts me, and thus an upward movement is born, circular shapes, a symbol of the passing of time, and the colors are not saturated.

The collage remains unique, but if the glue remains, another story, no longer that of the objects, erases the previous identity. What I like is composition by moving a material into another context.
