Discover the contemporary work of Emma de Karaka
My name is Emma, and my home is a sailboat, named Karaka, which sails in the tropics, around the world.
I make prints of tropical fish and marine animals from shore fishing.
This technique, of Japanese origin, is called "gyotaku".
Each animal is weighed, dated, and the GPS point is recorded. I then cover it with ink to record its imprint on a cotton fabric. Once the ink is dry, I rework the result by adding my personal touch.
These prints are not only works, but also unique memories of my travels and my maritime lifestyle.
Fishing is carried out by freediving and with a homemade harpoon gun. Each animal is cleaned then consumed à edge.
