Minimalism or minimal art is a movement in contemporary art born in the 1960s in the United States. It comes from the rebellion of two artists Sol Le Witt and Donald Judd against abstract expressionism and Pop Art triviality. Since that time, minimalism has invested our daily culture, proposing a "reflection on the essential character of things".

Minimalism is very economical with compositional elements. The content of the image is not only reduced to the banality of the subject, it is also based on a "restricted visual language".

A minimalist image can be considered successful when it manages to "move" the viewer with the minimum of elements that compose it. It is the imagination of the viewer that will make his message intelligible. This message will be different from one person to another, that is the strength of this photographic genre.
