I want to infuse my portraits with a sense of naturalism, so that the subjects appear familiar. Nothing should be contrived and sentimental. I describe my subjects in an environment that matches my life and in a way that best captures their gestures and movements. My role is to be sensitive enough to capture those moments when they happen. A successful portrait is much more than a mirror of a physical likeness: it transcends form and reveals the subject's spirit and personality. This is what I am looking for in my painting.A portrait is a work of art in its own right.
I am also inspired by the works of Caravaggio, Rembrandt and others, in particular their mastery of light. I constantly strive to bring these dramatic lighting elements to my own work in a modern way, as I see this as a powerful way to bring to life the energy, movement and determination that each subject possesses. .
The masters achieved their lighting effects through multiple thin layers of oil paint. Working only in oil takes time to achieve the dramatic shine I envision when first conceptualizing a piece, mainly due to the long drying times for each coat.
My paintings aspire to convey the intensity, energy and soul that these individual characters emit that fuel the greater drama inherent in all human expression.
I am a tireless observer of people. I am fascinated by both our incredible diversity and our fundamental similarity. Capturing someone, with all of their complexities, through painting on canvas has to be one of the most challenging and rewarding endeavors in art. Portrait painting is the enduring art form through which I describe and celebrate an individual's uniqueness
