Coming from a family where the artistic had a predominant place, François Paul always sought to make creation the driving force of his development.
His father. He studied at the École des Arts Appliqués in Paris, then worked with Chinese lacquer and gold leaf in the Dunant workshops in the 14th arrondissement of Paris. He then became a secondary school drawing teacher and practiced art screen printing, film photography and modeling.
His uncle. Bernard Paul studied at IDHEC, then became a film director after assisting Jean Giono, René Clément and Costa Gavras.
His paternal grandfather. After having played comedy alongside his cousin Fernandel, he became a stage manager at the Théâtre de la Potinière and then at the Théâtre de Poche in Paris in the 14th arrondissement.
His grandmother. Simone Le Carré-Galimard trained at the Arts Décoratifs in Paris, then became the massière of Germaine Richier. She then made her way as a visual artist in Art Brut.
This artistic heritage printed in his genes has accompanied François Paul throughout his career.
In 1987, he joined the École Supérieure Estienne des Arts et Industries Graphiques where he discovered the arts and crafts including bookbinding, gilding, engraving, lithography, screen printing, manual composition, typography, as well as the communication professions, particularly through graphic design.
He then flourished for many years as an artistic director in advertising, photographer, director, editor, motion designer, etc.
The discovery of ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) ultimately explains a creative insatiability and the difficulty in find a way to express what drives him. This disorder, which can be taken for a defect, turns out to be the basis of a new personality that asserts itself and that will find in sculpture the ideal mode of expression.
Images spring forth.
Antoni Gaudi's trencadís, Walter Sickert's paintings, William Eggleston's photos, Oscar Niemeyer's architecture, David Carson's graphic designs, Marcello Gandini's Lamborghini Countach, Barbara Hepworth's sculptures, the work of designer Charles Eames...
His family heritage, his artistic culture and his confusion give rise to multiple emotions that will amalgamate. In the manner of gypsum powder mixed with water, they will take shape and freeze in time.
His sculpture is simply the expression of the H of ADHD. A cerebral hyperactivity, where the thought and action in progress are never as interesting as the following thought and action. A cognitive and behavioral fluttering. An infinite artistic escape.
