Discover the contemporary work of Hélène ZENATTI

Initially, there was cinema, the moving image and the words that are spoken (cinema license in St Denis). There was also writing and photography. Cinema being at the confluence of these two mediums. Painting came only later, slowly, alone. The trigger came through the use of porcelain paints, which came into my hands by chance, on simple white ceramic tiles. Bright colors, fluidity, transparency and unparalleled light, brushwork somewhat comparable to that which can be done at watercolor, infinitely modular formats...

Then, it was necessary to dare more classic techniques, oil or acrylic painting, painting on canvas, and even painting large, why not? Looking for materials, reliefs, testing painting with a knife or with fingers, trying the confusion/superposition between photography and painting, between writing and painting.

But whatever the technique used, the themes, themselves, remain the same: indistinct, unreal, lost characters, sometimes made up, often alone; invented landscapes, trees without leaves, misty deserts, imaginary cities, slender, troubled, horizons of illusions; abstracts with swirling colors, dizzying surges and, sometimes, soothing voids.

There is no technique that is better than another. Neither major art nor minor art. Painting, writing, photography, everything must be attempted to give existence to the ghosts that haunt us, to the lost places of our imagination. All the canvases are signed HZEN on the front, countersigned, dated and titled on the back. The photos are signed and numbered.
