From sound to image.

Over time, the practice of photography has taught me to be critical of what we have done, humble with what we do and ambitious with what we are about to do. 

Passionate about music and vintage HiFi since childhood, I observe that the terms used to describe a sound reproduction often belong to the same registers as those that describe an image. In both cases we speak of grain, depth, brightness, dynamics or even level of definition. In both cases, the turf wars between supporters of digital or analog (film) sometimes give rise to often sterile oppositions.

It is therefore by taking this lexical bridge that I came to go from sound to image. But always one foot on each side ...

“Color is descriptive, black and white are interpretative,” said Elliott Erwitt.

Between a technical error to avoid and a claim to an artistic form, over time, photographic blur has evoked one thing and its opposite.

With the first technical advances in photography, blur rhymes with error, imprecision and approximation, while painting has already largely consecrated it (notably through the sfumato technique).

This confrontation around blur and sharpness will feed a contradictory, even conflicting dialogue between painting and photography. A dialogue at the end of which photography will finally free itself from this imperative to produce clear images.

The way is then opened to invest in a finally freer and more interpretative field, and to erect in turn the practice of blur to the rank of artistic discipline.

It is therefore to a double subjectivity of the gaze that this gallery invites you: By building a bridge between the interpretative dimension of black and white, and the non-formal representation of reality through the prism of blur and/or "imprecision".
