Discover the contemporary work of KARAYANNIS Marc-Bernard
Childhood is fundamental. Human beings are structured around the models that have been erected around them since a very young age. From the age of four and thanks to parents who were teachers, I had the chance to be immersed in a literary and artistic universe. My father, in particular, influenced me a lot. A painter, designer and ceramicist, he let me accompany him to his studio where he designed phenomenal architectural projects. There, when I could barely speak, he let me paint on decorative panels. Awakening and curiosity have always been driving forces in my family.
It was quite natural that my higher education led me to the École nationale supérieure des arts appliqués and the École des Beaux-arts in Paris. But if I had to date a real turning point, it would be in 1995, when I set up my first real personal studio in the Cévennes: a return to the earth that revealed the direction my work should take.
If I had to define my source of inspiration, I would say that it comes from my travels in an imaginary world that escapes the norms of the real world. I bring back memories, fragments of distant galaxies, dust from universes marked by time... Among the recurring themes of this collection of memories, the letter X figures prominently. It bears witness to the invisible, memory and the timeless. Paradoxically, it invades our lives. It symbolizes both the anonymity and the omnipotent universality of social networks. It is nowhere and everywhere.
I also use the letter V, synonymous with victory, like that of Samothrace, perhaps because of my Greek roots...
