I've always drawn, not just sketches, with whatever I could find: a pencil, a pen, a piece of tablecloth in a restaurant, a board in the bulky waste... but it had to come out by any means necessary.
Artistic approach
I think mostly instinctively; I never know what I'm going to paint in advance. Over the years, I obviously prepare my supports better so I can keep them, but the supports can be frames, boards cut from bulky items, canvases, too.
