Discover the contemporary work of Magali Strassi
It was mainly in the studios of the painter and calligrapher Jean-Luc Moreau Romain (Paris) and the painter Anne Rouillon (Paris) that I learned to paint, to contemplate works of art and to let my imagination and artistic freedom open up.
My works are polymorphic. First, inscribed in a universe of painting and paper collages (wallpapers, newspapers, magazines, posters), I have been developing, since 2009, creations in volume: installations, assemblages and objects of curiosity. These creations combine everyday objects (beds and various accessories), childhood objects (toys, stuffed animals) and fabrics (sheets, tea towels) from my own stocks of souvenir objects or recovered from bulky items and recycling centers.
Even with recurring driving themes, I cannot imagine my practice without constantly renewed experiments. Also, I easily move from painting production phases to volume creation phases according to my needs for expression or exhibition projects.
Drawing my inspiration from current events that in my personal life (dreams, memories, travels), I deliver my inner questions about childhood, freedom, humanity, the contradictions of the world. Quite playful at first glance, my creations often hide their game...
In 2024, I mainly worked on collages from recovered posters.
I like the idea of recovering the raw material for my creations in the streets.
I extract pieces of posters stuck on billboards or on walls in order to reuse them. I tear them up, reorganize them, juxtapose them and then stick them back on recycled wallpapers and pasted on cardboard.
I try to to bring out a graphic composition in which the colors vibrate between them and where each element is one with the other: the pattern and color of the papers, the shape and trace of the tear, the wear of the material and the words.
Beyond the aesthetic aspect of the assembly, each one tells a story of current French society, from our cultural tastes to our political turmoil.
My latest collages are more chaotic, the image of the poster campaigns linked to the European and then legislative elections of May - June - July 2024. I superimposed many layers of posters between them in order to make a thick material and a destructured form. The contours are floating and leave free the traces of the tears. In this organized chaos human or animal forms sometimes appear.
