Maja Chan is a Hong Kong-Polish artist whose work expresses the multicultural identity of Hong Kong people, who often find themselves caught between east and west. Much of her work is centered around Chinese stone-carved dragons, which are found all over her home city. Although she studied Fashion Design and Patternmaking in Paris for three years. she deicded to turn her focus back to the world of Fine Art. Her studies deepened her interest and understanding and appreciation of craftmanship and artistry.
Influenced by her multicultural background, Maja Chan uses her work to explore the human psyche and express the multicultural identity of Hong Kong people, who often find themselves caught between east and west. She combines historical and cultural subjects with modern styles and colours.
Although those who are unfamiliar with Chinese dragons may judge their appearance, fearing them to be demonic or monstrous, she instead sees them as creatures of immense elegance and wisdom. In Chinese culture, dragons represent protection, leadership, and “qi”, the vital force. They are the spiritual manifestation of the energy that flows through all material and immaterial aspects of the world. Chinese dragons are the vessel through which she explores how energy and the human psyche interact. She reimagines these creatures, breathing life and passion into them in the form of colour and texture.
