Discover the contemporary work of Phil Jacques
I am 62 years old and I live in Marly (57).
I am a self-taught painter, not a professional
Acrylic is almost always the basic medium, then pastel, charcoal, pencil, black stone, Indian ink, walnut stain, acrylic ink, spray are mixed in.
I am currently working on paper and cardboard, mainly in 50 x 70, 60 x 80 and 70 x 100 cm formats.
I also work, but not continuously, on bodies.
The series of portraits / self-portraits really began at the end of 2015.
A vital need in portraits is not to give in to the visible appearance of the face, and therefore to go and see inside, to try to enter it: I start with a photo and it is when I see the fault or the crack in this head that everything can begin, that I will be able to enter it. But it can also be the opposite, it is what is in this head that will be able to come out and provoke me.
All this is intimately linked to my experience.
I paint portraits that I inevitably also see as self-portraits:
"... even if it's not visually me who is in the painting, it's still a self-portrait because it's still me who painted it. Every time I paint someone, I don't try to make it look like them, I don't care if the painting looks like the person. It's stronger than that. I'm going to try to put in it what we don't see, what people don't see. And even without knowing the person, or their experience, or anything at all. I will try to go and look consciously and unconsciously, there is everything in there, something that goes beyond the visual image. It is to bring out something that we cannot see with the naked eye somewhere...."
