Discover the contemporary work of Tom De Meulder
Fascinated by the beauty of the Breton nature, for many years now I have been sharing my time between my native country (Belgium) and Brittany, in order to enjoy the nature of the forests and coasts of the region.
During my long walks in these enchanted woods, I collect what nature sees fit to leave me. I pick up pieces of ivy, attached to branches fallen on the paths, or old roots of trees that fell a long time ago and I make sculptures by working and assembling them.
My goal is not to completely transform these pieces of wood, but simply to accentuate their forms and inherent beauty. By adorning the ivy and reinforcing its own unique characteristics, I try to collaborate with nature and create singular pieces. The roots are cleaned, prepared and sanded until their beauty is even more accentuated.
In recent years I have also started working with stones. Shapes and colors are always the most important.
Thank you for taking the time to discover my works, which I hope you will like. The process of development has fascinated me enormously anyway.
Tom De Meulder
I always start with wood, found in the forest. After cleaning it I make abstract sculptures by eliminating the parts that are too much. Then I add gum=lacque and I sand until I am happy with the result. Each piece takes me between a few days to a week.
