- SCULPTOR, noun. masc.
A. − Artist who practices the art of sculpture. Synonym. (in the Middle Ages) image maker, stone carver (rem. s.v. entailler).Sculptor of figures, bas-reliefs, ornaments; burin, chisel, sculptor's equipment. I find him in his studio on Boulevard Vaugirard, the ordinary sculptor's studio with its plaster-splattered walls (Goncourt, Journal, 1886, p. 563).It is very rare for a modeler, who knows nothing about working with stone, to revisit the work of the practitioner. The choice of stone is only of great importance to the sculptor who is carving (Arts et litt., 1935, p. 20-16).− P. metaphysics The greatest beauty of a city is not in the buildings, it is in the free space between the buildings. The great artisans of cities are sculptors of space (Duhamel, Combat ombres, 1939, p. 77).
Rem. When speaking of a woman, we most often use the masc. sculptor; we also say woman sculptor or sculptress (rare): she is not only a sculptress, but also a painter (Mérimée, Lettres ctessede Montijo, t. 2, 1868, p. 355).
REM.
Sculpter, masc. noun, rare. Mediocre sculptor. Some of the sculptors we are going to talk about are very capable of to point out the few flaws in the execution of this marble [by Bartolini] (Baudel., Salon, 1845, p. 79).
