His art

Thierry Bruet's pictorial art is based on an impressive technical mastery which allows this gifted self-taught artist to evoke in turn all the great French, Italian and Spanish masters of the 17th century "without inhibition or complex". This formal ease explains why Thierry, when he talks about his painting, essentially evokes the subjects, the way it goes without saying: "To tell a story, to seize a moment, without judging, nor condemning, I incorporate in my figurative canvases, old age, the grotesque, the decay of the being, that of society, it is often a question of the fatuity and vanity of human existence. Humanity is insane and never ceases to fascinate me in its smallest details. The human being and his multiple faces remain my main source of inspiration. ".
This is why one of his views is towards the caricature, the grotesque, the other towards elegance, the refined. This same duality can be found in the telescoping of eras that Thierry Bruet likes to practice by creating anachronistic encounters between characters and objects brought together across the centuries in the same space of the canvas. The visual shock produced is disturbing. Is this iconoclastic gesture surreal? It seems to go deeper than a simple discrepancy or an improbable dreamlike encounter. It is not the unconscious that takes precedence, but rather consciousness, culture and a love of great works. For there is one thing that holds together all these supposedly disparate elements: painting. It is painting that unifies everything. These surprising, destabilising images, served by an impeccable classical style, make us more aware than ever that we are standing before a canvas. Par excellence. Of a classicism that imposes itself. This is what Thierry Bruet does: he paints pictures that are self-designated as paintings. Because they magnify painting.
