Marie-Pierre SAINT PIERRE

Marie-Pierre was born in 1942 in Scrignac, France and graduated form l?ecole Superieur de Commerce. In 1962, she started working at Pigier. While on a trip to Zurich she met a young Haitian. She got married in Paris in 1964 to that young man and had her first contact with Haitian art .The first painting of her collection was from Bernard Wah, her husband friend, who was studying at L?Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. In 1965, during a vacation In Port-au-Prince, Marie-Pierre had her first contact with primitive Haitian art. Her personal collection grew with the addition of painting by Viard, Jean René Jerome, Gabriel Leroy and Carlo Jn Jacques. She left for Ivory Coast in 1966 and discovered African Art. Her collection grew with about fifty African paintings and a large quantity of ancient masks. It was at this time that the need to paint emerged. She secretly started to draw and paint but everyone still ignored her talent. She moved to Haiti in 1972 and started putting together successful shows with her collection of African art. She met with Bernard Sejourne and it was the beginning of a long friendship with this great artist. The quality and the beauty of Sejourne?s work made her stop painting. In 1998 many years after the death of her friend Bernard, she decided to set aside her own fear, and display her first painting, which reflects deep feeling and tenderness.
