ARTISTIC APPROACH
"My paintings and drawings are narrative stagings, a dazzling journey. Dance, cinema, the world of entertainment are their bodies, their materials and the love of detail is their reading paths. Each work tells a story and reveals a feeling.
Narrative Paintings - The Artist's Line since 2014
Franco-Tunisian visual artist born in Tunis in 1974, lives and works in Paris. He joined the Higher Institute of Fine Arts in Tunis from 1994 to 1998 (Master's degree in Arts Sciences and Techniques) then he followed a course at the Créapole school (Certificate of specialization in visual communication) in Paris from which he graduated in visual communication in 2000. He obtained a Master MEEF1 (Professions in Teaching, Education and Secondary Education) in Visual Arts at the University of Paris 8 in 2015.
In his work, Walid LEMKECHER composes a personal universe that draws its source from the world of classical dance, entertainment, cinema and countries such as Russia, India and his own oriental origins.
The theme of classical ballet is dear to the artist, it is his passion. This art that he practiced for more than fifteen years and which constitutes a source of inspiration for him. We find in his paintings; the costume and the voluptuous work of fabrics and patterns and embroidery, the sparkle of the crystals of Swarovski stones), the luxuriant sets of classical ballets which he continually feeds on. Each canvas is a staging, a visual spectacle that the artist offers us to see. Walid LEMKECHER composes his canvas like a choreographer. Each element is carefully chosen with an attention to detail. This detail which gives his paintings an effect of rarity and finesse like a goldsmith facing the creation of an adornment. In his painting, the artist takes on the role of both Jeweler and Couturier. He likes to combine his passion for his different artistic professions to make them his own.
In his stagings, Walid LEMKECHER sublimates women and their femininity, whether they are dancers, actresses or muses, they are both sensuality and strength, a mysterious or melancholic seductive beauty that exerts its power of fascination on its spectators. Walid LEMKECHER's women carry a certain psychological depth. His works are treated with theatricality and offers itself to the viewer's gaze.
In his creative process, the artist integrates video to illuminate his paintings, he stages himself in choreographed presentations, thus creating a whole coherent device. A dialogue between the artist and his canvas is established. The artist blends into his canvas and his canvas becomes his reflection. His artistic universe deepens, becomes more precise and takes on its full dimension to deliver a visual spectacle to us.
Drawings In the footsteps of the Ballet La Bayadere - Sleeping Beauty - Romeo and Juliet.
In small and medium formats, the artist approaches the movement and lines of the body, The dichotomy of shadows and lights suggests the dramatic intensity of the scenes, the background that represents the corps de ballet or the decor is treated by a system of fine hatching that draws almost ghostly motionless silhouettes.
The velvety of the line and the fine hatching suggest the atmospheric thickness and give the drawing an effect close to a print.
The large formats are a recontextualization of the choreographic and scenic elements from different sequences (acts) of the ballet. It is a new choreographic and spatial annotation through the drawing. Each drawing is a new story, a new plot.
The intensity The dramatic nature of the staging is accentuated by the dichotomy of shadow and light, while the architectural elements create an emotional charge that transports the viewer through a spectacular visual effect. Thus, shapes and spaces are delineated, characters are drawn in an infinite impression of details.
Thanks to a repetitive mechanism of the hand gesture which is however never the same in its intensity, the artist plays with the pressure exerted on the paper support by means of his pencil to approach values and nuances from the lightest to the darkest, thus giving to his drawings a delicate and refined aspect of great regularity that refer us by their plastic effects to the engravings of the 18th and 19th centuries.
From a process of treatment in weft of vertical lines like threads that weave, the drawings have an effect resembling a wall tapestry. The short, continuous or discontinuous lines give a sensation of vibration, rhythm, precision and blur at the same time creating a certain tension. This tension plunges us into a dramatic tragic romance, real / unreal in this series of drawings.
The notion of "Time" is an important component throughout the creative process; a slow, elastic development time necessary to achieve a result spectacular effect.
Walid LEMKECHER's drawings are theatrical, dramatic settings that reveal a spectrum of the emotional field.
Abstraction 2005 - 2013
Through vertical lines, an accumulation of repeated patterns, small squares and rectangles reminiscent of the piles of houses in a vibrant medina and a warm chromatic palette with golden and silver reflections, the artist illustrates the opulence of an Orient, that of our imagination. The Orient is here that of two shores, the southern shore of the Mediterranean and that further east of Eastern Europe, which the artist likes to bring together here.
Shimmering colors, the subtle balance of the compositions, the repetition of patterns, the play of transparency and superposition; the visual artist Walid Lemkecher has made these his assets in his practice of his previous abstract paintings.
We find in his abstract paintings inspired by dance; the costume and the voluptuous work of fabrics and patterns and embroidery, the sparkle of the crystals of the Swarovski stones, the luxuriant sets of the classical ballets from which he continually draws nourishment (Souvenir de la Bayadere, Ballet La Source, Twilight at the Taj Mahal).
Through a maze of colors and shapes, Walid LEMKECHER invites our gaze to a sensitive stroll. From the alleys of an old medina, to the blue of the village Sidi Bou Said (Window on a Golden City, Arabesques of Sidi Bou Said), to the opulence of a well-known souk in Tunis (El Berka, the magic of goldsmiths, The street of goldsmiths).
With its recognizable colors and signs, Tunisia blends with Russia and its symbols, from the whiteness of a dancer's skin to the shapes of a Russian doll. (Arab-Russian patchwork, Supreme journey, Russian evening's dream).
The visual artist, Walid LEMKECHER mixes signs, from geometric designs reminiscent of zelliges to the more iconic shapes of a hand of Fatima to those of Russian dolls. Walid Lemkecher likes to lose himself and distract himself in his imagination. He intervenes several times in his large canvases to play with opposites and cause plastic ruptures. Polygons break the vertical lines, the reflections of the gilding collide with a systematic scraping of the surfaces, the elements applied with stencils strive to flatten the depth of the canvas. The artist's gesture removes the overly luxurious character of a painting that conceals any history to illuminate an abstraction born of a reality inspired by by the world of classical ballet.
Walid LEMKECHER superimposes, cuts, scratches, covers, and crushes the paint. He travels across the canvas to saturate it with colors and abstract shapes or those from traditional patterns of jewelry and fabrics diverted here into pictorial principles. The observation of the artist's canvases is not limited to the simple effort of the gaze, it is all the senses that are provoked. Like an invitation to an inner journey initiated by Walid Lemkecher, his works offer the richness of a palette of shapes and colors to create moments of dazzlement beyond the frame of the canvas.
