ANECDOTES : Anonymity wishful thinking
Everyone knows the Pièta, the seated marble Madonna carrying the corpse of Christ in her arms and on her lap. But who knows that this is the only work signed by Michelangelo. And why? Because he was offended to hear it attributed to someone else by onlookers. Having left himself locked up for the night in the Basilica housing his work, he inscribed on the bust of Mary "MICHAL.ANGELUS BONAROTUS FLORENT.FACIEBAT", i.e. "It is I, Michelangelo Buanarotti the Florentine, who did this".
