Description
Nom communément donné au principal déchet de la fabrication d’alumine et d'aluminium par le procédé Bayer, très consommateur en eau et énergie et qui produit une grande quantité de déchets sous forme de boues rouges. Ces boues sont, ou non, prétraitées, avant d’être rejetées au large. Ceci porte une atteinte à l'environnement, irréversible pour la faune et la flore marine. À l'effet toxique des rejets s'ajoute l'engluement par la boue, remplissant les branchies des poissons, l'absence de lumière, pourtant indispensable au développement des organismes vivants. La toxicité des métaux lourds se mesure à long terme, ils s'accumulent dans les organismes, provoquant des altérations du comportement, du développement et de la reproduction. Quelques efforts de traitement viennent tardivement d’être faits.
